About Grade 18-8 Stainless Steel
Grade 18-8 stainless steel (also called Type 304) is the most common stainless alloy used in commercial fasteners. The "18-8" designation refers to its composition: approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel. This alloy provides excellent corrosion resistance in most atmospheric, marine, and mild chemical environments.
Important distinctions for stainless fastener selection:
- 18-8 stainless is non-magnetic — useful in electrical and electronic applications where magnetic interference is a concern
- Stainless steel can gall (seize) during installation if the threads run dry; always apply anti-seize lubricant when threading stainless fasteners together
- For saltwater immersion or chloride-heavy environments, Grade 316 stainless (with molybdenum) offers better resistance than 18-8
