The "8.8" marking encodes the material properties directly: the first digit (8) represents 1/100th of the minimum tensile strength in MPa (800 MPa), and the second digit (8) indicates the ratio of proof load to tensile strength (0.8), giving a proof load of approximately 640 MPa.
